Indian women have been known to accentuate the positives and remove the negatives and build a firm foundation with the bricks thrown at them. is an Indian social worker who has shown an immense dedication protecting the rights of women in the society. She has proved to be an idol for numerous Indian women.
An active social worker in her school days, Mirai was always dismayed to see the widespread poverty and inequality in the society. An alumnus of Harvard University, Mirai was alarmed with the injustice prevalent even in the developed and rich countries. She wanted to draw the women into their self-organizations.
Mirai Chatterjee has been attributed as the pioneer for women empowerment in modern day India. In a men monopolized society, she has worked extremely hard for the upliftment of women. Mirai Chatterjee is the director of social security at Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). SEWA is a national union following the ideologies and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Mirai has organized women workers of informal economy to work with SEWA in search of equality and justice. A passionate Mirai is determined to generate full employment for women workers so that they can sustain in the society. Mirai Chatterjee has worked tirelessly for the income, food, work and social security of women across India. The organization SEWA has more than 19 lakhs women members across 13 states in our country.
Her crusade to provide basic health care and child care facilities to all the women across India has generated support from international organizations as well. The moment of pride for Mirai was when the Young Presidents Organization invited the health worker as a guest lecturer and to attend an international conference in Mumbai. Mirai Chatterjee’s exceptional work is commendable and praiseworthy. She has made a significant impact in the life of lakhs of women and enabled them to sustain in this world.
In June 2010, Mirai was appointed as a member of National Advisory Council. She is also serving as the chairperson of the Lok Swasthya health cooperative and is responsible for the health care, child care and several other programmes. Mirai Chatterjee has worked tremendously for the women by introducing significant schemes for health and life insurance. The insurance cooperative facility started by Mirai has helped lakhs of poor Indians to live peacefully at the time of problems and other issues. She has also worked closely with the World Health Organization. Her tryst with social work had started four decades ago when as a young child she visited the slums in Mumbai and provided the children with basic education.
Mirai Chatterjee’s insights on women empowerment are inspiring and an eye opener to all the citizens across India. She is surely an inspiration to several women in India and throughout the world. Her selfless work for the society has been honoured with several awards to her name. Mirai Chatterjee is a renowned name across the world. Numerous NGOs working for the women upliftment have approached Mirai to initiate and start campaigns to ensure security for women in all aspects. Her dedication and professionalism has encouraged many young women in India to feel the plight of women in rural areas.
