This man made the most essential thing for the woman in cheaper price so that they could get it in reasonable price, sanitary pads which is the most important thing needed by a woman but sometimes they compromises to buy it as because they are quite costly and not reasonable for the poor woman and this invention changed the lives of those several poor women. He is the person who personally felt the intense problem of the woman during those five days of their menstrual cycle, and he introduced a high class sanitary pad which low in price compared to the other sanitary pads available in the market. He saved the lives of those women in rural India who were habituated in the unhygienic practices which led to severe damage to their lives. He was mere a school dropout uneducated person who was a simple man until one day he saw that his wife is using some rejected clothes and papers for her menstrual days as because they could not afford the sanitary pads available in the market.

Before this person nobody was bothered about this serious problem faced by the women of their household every five days or more in a month and how the women sacrificed by the sanitary pads just because they didn’t want to spare money for their this need as they considered buying sanitary napkins as waste of money and never realised that how important it is to use the sanitary pads during their periods to avoid infection which leads to severe problems and sometimes vaginal cancer.

His life and background

Arunachalam Muruganantham was born in the year 1962 at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu his parents S. Arunachalam and A. Vanita both were a weaver at Coimbatore Muruganantham belongs to a very poor family who hardly get anything to eat after his father died in an accident, his mother who tried very hard to earn something so that she could make her son continue with his studies, however sadly enough Muruganantham was dropped out of his school when he was just 14 years old and his education stopped then and there and he began to look for some job to run his family so at last he got a job of supplying food to the factory workers of a factory. He also took up several other odd jobs along with supplying food in the factory like operating some tools of the factory, as a farm labourer and welder and many more so that he could stand by his mother for supporting his family.

In the year 1998 he got married to a simple lady called Shanthi and was living a peaceful life along with his wife and family. After some days of his marriage he discovered that his wife was collecting some dirty rags and old newspapers needed for using during her menstrual days as buying sanitary pads from market will be too expensive for them by seeing this kind of problems being a true gentleman he felt very bad for his wife to feel the embarrassing problem faced by her and also the several women of rural India. This particular thought made him very anxious and he tried to make sanitary pads by experimenting with different kinds of materials and tried them on the female members of his family and also tried to look for some woman volunteers in order to examine his invented products but all the women were too timid to discuss about their menstrual problems with a man so at the end of the day he tried to experiment those on himself by using a bladder filled with animal blood and faced many kinds of humiliation by the common people of his locality as this menstruation is a subject to hide from the people and it is also considered as a social taboo for the people especially in the villages. He was made fun of in his community, he also give out some of his products free of cost to the local medical college and he made sure that they will be given back to him after use.

His work and factory

After he became quite experienced in making the sanitary pads he confronted the fact that making these products costs only around 20-30 paisa and the renowned commercial brands sold them at a price forty times more than the manufacturing cost. Though Muruganantham was trying his level best to produce right kind sanitary pads but somehow he was unable to produce the right product, after a hard work of two years he came to know the fact that the materials used by him for making the sanitary pads was not right as the commercial companies prepare those products by using cellulose fibres which are received from the bark of wood pulp so that they could absorb by retaining their shape and for making these kind of pads will need an imported machine which will cost around lakhs of money beyond his imagination so he opt for some low cost machine which could be operated with minimal training and needs a low maintenance cost and he also contacted a supplier who will supply him  the pine wood from Mumbai and the work of the machine will be to grind, sterilize and press those to give them a shape of a sanitary pad and to make sure they are 100% hygienic before they are sold to the market.

In the year 2006 during his visit to IIT Madras in order to present his idea and to get suggestions from them, they readily approved his idea  and he also won an award for this innovative idea then after obtaining some funds he was able to construct his factory called “Jayashree Industries” along with the machine which is able to produce sanitary pads in cheaper rate and they are 100% hygienic to use. The simplicity of using the machine readily welcomed many women worker working in his industry and the machine also got recognition worldwide and won many awards, despite his so much of popularity he refuse to come in the limelight being a very shy person and also refused the offers of buying his products and the machine by several commercial companies as he wants to give the machine only to the self help groups ran by women of our country.

Staying in the country where the security of the women is a huge challenge and finding a man like Arunachalam Muruganantham is really a charming experience may God bless this great human being
