A dream becomes a reality if one has the zeal and sheer determination to pursue it. A son of a truck driver father and an illiterate mother, N Shivakumar, has proved that hard work and perseverance is all that is required to achieve success.
A young Shiva was sensible enough to realize his father’s insufficiency to support his education. Shiva decided to sell flower garlands and newspapers to help his poverty-stricken family. He used to wake up at 4am even before dawn and go to different parts of his hometown selling newspapers. Shiva’s father lost his job when he met with an accident. A primary school going boy started washing cars to meet the daily needs of his family.
On one fine day, Shiva spotted a new family in a mansion where he used to toss newspaper every morning. Krishna Vedavyasa, the owner of the bungalow, soon turned to be messiah for N Shivakumar. Shiva’s inner instincts prompted him to get down from his bicycle and approach Krishna Vedavyasa, a 40-year-old man and the head of a business consultancy firm. A kind-hearted boy of just 14 years age expressed his desire to continue his studies. He even offered Krishna to let him wash his car daily.

On enquiring Shiva, Krishna Vedavyasa soon understood about his impoverished condition. Shiva Kumar even told Krishna about his inadequacy to submit his school fees of Rs.15000. At first, Krishna Vedavyasa was hesitant, but later on, after meeting Shiva’s parents and the school principal, decided to fund his entire education. While coming across the school principal, he was surprised to discover that Shiva was a wunderkind and a prudent boy.
Shiva carried on with his job of selling newspapers to meet several other needs. He went on to top his school in the ICSE Board examinations. His elated benefactor turned uncle was generous enough to distribute sweets with his family. Krishna Vedavyasa would keep a note and always pay the entire fees before the beginning of any academic year. He even helped Shiva learn English and improve his verbal and communication skills. His uncle asked him to pursue engineering in Computer Science stream. After his under graduation, he was bestowed with a job from a top IT firm of India, Wipro. A delightful Krishna encouraged Shiva to go for higher studies and prepare for CAT. He even aided him to enroll with a renowned coaching institute in Bengaluru. Finally the day came when N Shiva Kumar belled the CAT and was admitted in IIM Calcutta in 2013.
From a newspaper vendor to an IIM alumnus, N Shivakumar has witnessed days even without a single course of meal. His entire journey from rags to riches is certainly jaw dropping and an inspirational one. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, N Shivakumar landed up with a top notch international job being the de-facto number two of the country with a popular e-commerce giant. A Samaritan, Krishna Vedavyasa turned out to be a messiah in Shiva’s life. After paying his education loan, N Shivakumar is keen to start his own enterprise, make it a global name and touch the skies.
