PVC Major Vikram Batra remains the “Sher Shah” of the Indian Army.

Light a candle for this great Indian hero

What can we possibly say about the brave men who protect us from the potent enemies at the borders day in and day out, just so that we can sleep well in our mother’s lap? One such man, coming from the pristine hills of Palampur is Major Vikram Batra ( Param Vir Chakra Awardee) who smilingly embraced death at the face of the Kargil War which India faced in Kashmir when Pakistan attacked us in the year 1999.

While you would certainly come across this name in case you visit the hall at the Service Selection Center, or maybe the combined cadet’s mess in IMA or the residential areas in Jabalpur Cantonment, this man was a no ordinary guy who proved to us that if you have the grit you can certainly achieve the impossible.

batra3The youngsters of India should not only be well aware of this martyr of Kargil War, but also take inspiration from his life and the deeds for which he deserves innumerous salutes for the generations to come.

A simple B.Sc. graduate who always intended to serve the Indian Army, Major Vikram Batra started his dream run when he got selected to the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun in the year 1996 under the Jessore Company of Manekshaw Battalion. It was 6th of December, 1997 that the day came when Major Vikram Batra took his oath as an Officer of the Indian Army as a Lieutenant of the 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles at Sopore and then in Jammu & Kashmir where he got assigned to the rank of a Captain.

Full of determination, his last words before he was starting off to address the assigned to the task of snatching the point 4875 during the Kargil War from the enemies was “I’ll either come back after raising the Indian flag in victory or return wrapped in it, but I will come for sure”. The Indian government the point as Vikram Batra top in his honor too.

This story is about the courageous 24 year boy who laid his life for our nation, who could have led a normal life, with a MNC job somewhere in India, married with kids by now, but he chose otherwise.

The motto of the Indian Army was somewhere etched into his mind from the time he had joined the forces as a cadet, “The safety, honor and welfare of your country come first always and every time. The honor, welfare and comfort of your men you command come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety comes last, always and every time.” This young soldier who has been honored time and again by the Indian government with various accolades have also bestowed upon him the Param Vir Chakra, the highest and the prestigious award for a valor, who  fought ferociously and died without any fear.

2sc62It was on the first of the June, 1999 when India was facing a lot of pressure from the enemy forces during the ongoing Kargil War that Major Vikram Batra’s unit was assigned to recapture one of the most significant of the peak in the region, Point 5140 which was then illegally possessed by the Pakistani army men. Showing a lot of intelligence and courage to take on the enemy forces from the rear side, Major Batra was capable of capturing the point and regardless of his personal injuries moved forward to advance in the Kargil War. After this difficult point, Batra and his team were also able to recapture the point 4875 and the point 4750 too!

While media and his family were talking volumes about the achievements of the fearless and young 24 year soldier who single handedly made the Pakistani’s sweat out of fear, this man took on himself another mission which he knew could prove to be fatal for him. He was captured saying in an interview before taking on his dream mission that he hoped that the government of the nation would take good care of the families of the martyrs.

It was on the fateful morning of 7th July, year 1999 that Major Vikram Batra and his team were assigned to a rescue mission while the attack was on full force from the Pakistani army that this brave boy from Palampur breathed his last.

While his death was no more of an example to every Indian and every human being as he led his life not only fir the nation but also while saving a Subedar in his team who he intended to save as he had a family and a kid to look after (‘Tu baal- bacchedaar hai, hat ja peeche’) while Major took the bullet onto himself which made him immortal and a lot more. The last words of the martyr were “Jai Mata Di” which means Victory to Maa Durga, the Hindu Goddess of Victory.

Major Vikram Batra’s life is not a story; it is a real life incident that we fail to encounter every day. His bravery, valor and the respect and the concern for his fellow men and the oath that he had taken while joining the army all makes him to be a true hero that everyone of us should pay tribute to.

It has been proved time and again that this brave boy who led his life for the safety of the nation was denoted as “Sher Shah” by the Pakistani army men, his fearless nature proved the name to the T.

This great soldier and martyr will always remain alive in the hearts of the millions of Indians who stay safe in their houses while soldiers like Major Vikram Batra lay their lives at the border and in the wars to make us feel safe and secure.

Long after he got immortal, the twin brother of Major Vikram Batra took to social media where he mentioned that when this brave martyr was in the Indian Military Academy (IMA), the footnote of his letter pad read, “If Death comes to me before I prove my blood, I promise I’ll kill Death”.

And yes, he did keep his words till his last breath.

Salute, Respect, Admiration; for the GREAT INDIAN HERO – MAJOR VIKRAM BATRA.
